A Note From A Parent By Eliza Chan
I still remember the first day that I brought my daughter Hannah to the Manitoba Academy of Chinese Studies for her kindergarten class. She was anxious, and so was I, as we did not know much about the school.
It has been more than two years now since that day, and I have learned much about the school and gotten involved in ways that I have not initially expected. The experience has been extremely enriching for me.
I first got involved when the school staff mentioned that they need help in recess supervision. Since I was there, I thought I might as well make good use of my time and help out. Through my casual helping out, I found that behind the school there is a team of dedicated administrative staff that keeps the school running. It was composed of volunteers that donate their time every Saturdays to run the school. Their jobs range (among other things) from photocopying and distributing newsletters to talking to parents, and filing school reports. Their dedication impressed me.
A little while later, I was invited to join the Administrative Committee. The committee meets regularly to discuss the affairs of the school such as organizing the writing and oratorical contests, and planning for the graduation ceremony. Throughout the process, I have met many nice and capable people who share a common goal - to make the school a better place for learning Chinese and Chinese culture.
This year I have been asked to join the Executive Committee. I know I have a lot to learn about the school but I am looking forward to a year of challenge.
The school is evolving. Every year we have seen rising enrolment. There are students from different backgrounds with different level of language skills. It is often difficult to meet every student¡¯s needs. However, I know the school staff is trying their best. I know with the dedication of the principal and vice principal, and the administrative and the executive staff and teachers, this year will be a success.
I have found being involved in the academy a great experience. The experience not only offers me a chance to be involved in my child¡¯s education, it also gives me a great sense of community.
As we face the challenge of another school year, I hope that more volunteers will come and join our team in making the school a better place. It is only by being involved that one can truly appreciate the school. Being a non-profit organization, the academy needs your help to survive and flourish. Why don¡¯t you donate some time on a Saturday morning to a worthy cause?
As I did, I am sure you will find the experience a rewarding one.

Mrs. Margaret Klyk donated Styrofoam cups to the Chinese Academy. It is very thoughtful of her to do this so that people can enjoy a cup of tea during recess time.
